I went to Hardwick Hall with my sister in Derbyshire for Day 61. It was was rambling estate and built by one mighty woman , Bees of Hardwick. while i walked around the house it occurred to me how things have changed over time . I consider myself to be lucky to live in this age as life expectancy then was only 48 yrs . When I think of our ancestors I think of the dreadful pain they endured from illness , battles and in some cases punishment and torture, but I guess this is happening in other parts of the world now !
It is strange how we normalise things when it is happening to us.I wonder if in years to come we will look back to the olden days of the 2013 and someone might listen to a history lesson and think how much pain they endured and how we let humans live in pain but let animals end their suffering .
I was interested in the news item today about Liverpool Care Pathway which give licence to withdraw food, medicine and water for the terminal ill . I wonder where the idea came for that ? I suspect that it came from emptying hospital beds earlier and a cost saving initiative . I hope that anther pathway will be developed to replace this to assist people to die in a humane manner.
It is evident that society’s perception changes over the years and how we integrate new ideas . We have adopted so many innovative ideas such as living on other planets, develop technology to replace parts of our bodies, using DNA to develop new breeds, to travel the world as super fast speed, to manage most our life from a tablet style PC. I guess years ago I couldn’t have written this blog and ideas could not be communicated as easily , I would be also be writing all my words on a paper with a pen and letters to those who I didn’t see. My world would have been very narrow.
So we have developed so many methods of enhancing our life but why haven’t we turned our attention to humans to experience a comfortable death in the face of terminal illness . the very thing we might experience unless we have a sudden death but as a society we are blinkered to this, perhaps too scary !!!
